April: National Autism Awareness Month!

As most of you know I work as an autism inclusion program instructional assistant aide at a local elementary school here in Carmichael. I absolutely love my job, my coworkers and our students. April is National Autism Awareness Month, so my coworkers and I decided to make it a priority to educate the other staff members on autism. The staff had such a great response! We enjoyed making shirts, posters and fact sheets for our staff break room that we decided to make this a tradition.

 FYI:

  • Autism prevalence figures are growing
  • Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
  • Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average
  • Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases
  • Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism
  • There is no medical detection or cure for autism
  • Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys

  • Love,
    Katie
